Official Hogwarts House Sorting Quiz

house slytherin

This ambition can lead to great things, or it can make Slytherins seem pushy and power-hungry. When it comes to the traits of a Slytherin, I think that there are a pretty even combination of good and less good traits. For example, I don’t think it’s wrong to be a goal-oriented person.

Gryffindor

He also has rather controversial beliefs when it comes to the non-magical population. Slytherin believed that magical learning should be kept within all magic families. In other words, he thought only purebloods had the right to study magic and that thought that Muggle-borns were not worthy of attending Hogwarts. This caused a lot of tension between Slytherin and the other three founders as, thankfully, they didn’t agree with him. Slytherin students are known for being ambitious, cunning, and resourceful.

The Different Qualities of a Slytherin

Yes, there are a lot of dark wizards that originated in Slytherin, but Peterpettigrw was a cowardly traitor and he was a Gryffindor. Professor Quirrell was possessed by Lord Voldemort and he was a Ravenclaw. Then, both Snape and Slughorn were Slytherins that turned out to be very good men (admittedly Snape wasn’t always, but he chose the right path in the end). And Harry’s son actually ends up being sorted into Slytherin and he wasn’t a bad wizard. Therefore, I don’t think your house dictates what you turn out to be – I think your own personal choices do.

Personality and traits

We play to win, because we care about the honour and traditions of Slytherin. His chocolate frog card describes him as one of the first Parselmouths, an accomplished Legilimens and a notorious champion of pure-blood supremacy. Now, we’re assuming you’re more than familiar with the four houses of Hogwarts, but here’s a quick refresher, just in case. The Sorting Hat would only put you in this house if you demonstrated excellent wisdom, wit and a skill for learning.

house slytherin

The house colours are scarlet and gold, the common room lies up in Gryffindor Tower and the Head of House is Professor Minerva McGonagall. The Sorting Hat simply could have taken into account what house they wished to be placed in which, with their family history, was most likely Slytherin. There had also been definite examples of half-bloods sorted into the house, including Tom Riddle, Dolores Umbridge, and Severus Snape. Harry Potter, a half-blood, was nearly sorted into Slytherin, but because he asked not to be, he was placed in Gryffindor instead.[8] Also, pure-bloods were not automatically placed in Slytherin. There had been various examples of pure-bloods sorted into other houses; the Weasley family, Sirius Black, Neville Longbottom, and James Potter were all sorted into Gryffindor house, and Ernie Macmillan was sorted into Hufflepuff. The Slytherin common room is located in the basement of Hogwarts castle, behind a green door with a snake knocker.

If you are looking to achieve your goals and value wealth and power, then I think that Slytherin is the perfect house for you. There are many theories on how someone as powerful as Bellatrix was defeated by someone as kind as Molly. The most popular theory is that she was killed because Bellatrix doesn’t often face an opponent that’s actually willing to kill her -personally, I think that, because so many people are scared of Bellatrix, this is most likely true. Tom Riddle was the most powerful Dark Wizard of all time and the main antagonist of the Harry Potter series. He was born to a Muggle father and a Witch mother, making him a half-blood. But his mother was a descendent of Salazar Slytherin, making him the heir to the ancient and powerful Slytherin bloodline.

He believed that Muggle-born students were not worthy of attending the school and would eventually bring about its downfall. In fairer terms, there were many good witches and wizards in the house who opposed the use of the Dark Arts, as well as discrimination based on blood purity, such as Horace Slughorn, Andromeda Tonks, and Leta Lestrange. Andromeda was related to many dark witches and wizards, such as her own sister Bellatrix Lestrange, and brother-in-law Lucius Malfoy, but she chose to forsake the loyalty to her family in favour of marrying the Muggle-born Ted Tonks. It appeared that reputation had led to an ironic prejudice against the entire house.

I personally find it mad that Slytherin was able to build such a chamber within a school without any of the other greatest witches and wizards of the age finding out. I’m guessing this is another example of Slytherins being exceptionally cunning and able to achieve anything they want if the truly put their minds to it. This Chamber was a secret room that Slytherin built beneath the school, which could only be opened by Parseltongue.

The corridors of Hogwarts can throw up surprises for the unwary, and you'll be glad you've got the Serpents on your side as you move around the school. As far as we’re concerned, once you've become a snake, you're one of ours – one of the elite. The dormitories have ancient four-posters with green and silk hangings and beadspreads embroidered with silver thread. Medieval tapestries depicting the adventures of famous Slytherins hang from the walls. If you were lucky enough to be sorted into this house, we can imagine you’re the type of person who has a strong moral compass, always works hard, is the most loyal friend, knows it is the taking part that counts and always has the best snacks. Gryffindor house is where you would find the pluckiest and most daring students (there’s a reason the house symbol is the brave lion).

This quality can be used for good or for ill, depending on the Slytherin in question. Never bring anyone from another house into our common room or tell them our password. The two heads of house who were known, were Severus Snape and also Horace Slughorn.

The house was founded by Salazar Slytherin, a wizard who believed that only those with pure blood should be allowed to attend Hogwarts. Slytherin is one of the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was founded by Salazar Slytherin. Slytherins are known for being cunning and ambitious, although it is also known to have produced many Dark witches and wizards. Slytherin House is one of the four houses into which students are Sorted when they start their first year at Hogwarts. Slytherin House was founded by Salazar Slytherin around 990AD. His personal belief in the superiority of Pure Blood wizards still influences the attitudes of Slytherin members today.

The Basilisk proceeded to petrify more students, but luckily, this time nobody was killed. Harry was able to destroy both the diary and the Basilisk, and the Chamber of Secrets was once again sealed. Although Slytherin took his locket, when he left Hogwarts, he left something much larger behind at the school. This something was also slightly more problematic – the Chamber of Secrets. The locket eventually came into possession of the Gaunt family, and then later, it was stolen by a young Tom Riddle who turned it into his third Horcrux. The Horcrux was destroyed by Ron Weasley using the sword of Gryffindor laced with Basilisk venom.

He was also a bit of a rebel and he didn’t always follow the rules. He believed in using magic for the greater good, regardless of what others might think. However, Slughorn was also a bit of a glory-seeker and he loved nothing more than to boast about his famous students. This is how Harry came to possess one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes, as Slughorn unwittingly told Harry about them. After spending an extended sentence in Azkaban after Voldemort’s downfall, she had also turned a little bit mad. She killed many innocent people during the First and Second Wizarding Wars, including Sirius Black and Dobby the House Elf.

He also became a Death Eater like his father and, as punishment for his father’s mistakes, Draco was tasked with killing Dumbledore in his 6th year. Draco Malfoy is a pure-blood wizard and the son of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy. Of course, being shrewd is another key quality of a Slytherin. This makes Slytherins excellent at reading people and understanding what they want. They are quick thinkers and often able to outsmart their opponents.

They like beating us only slightly less than we like beating them. Yes, some of that respect might be tinged with fear, because of our Dark reputation, but you know what? It can be fun, having a reputation for walking on the wild side. Chuck out a few hints that you've got access to a whole library of curses, and see whether anyone feels like nicking your pencil case. Let's talk about what we are, which is the coolest and edgiest house in this school.

Salazar Slytherin Harry Potter Lexicon

house slytherin

There was a legend that Slytherin built a secret chamber somewhere in Hogwarts that only his true heir would be able to open. This chamber, called the Chamber of Secrets, contained a monster that would finish his “noble purpose” of eradicating all the Muggle-born students at Hogwarts (Pm). According to legend, Slytherin reconciled with the other founders later in life and came back to Hogwarts Castle to die (JKR-W3).

Early life

And talking of people who aren’t destined for greatness, I haven't mentioned the Gryffindors. Now, a lot of people say that Slytherins and Gryffindors represent two sides of the same coin. Personally, I think Gryffindors are nothing more than wannabe Slytherins. Mind you, some people say that Salazar Slytherin and Godric Gryffindor prized the same kinds of students, so perhaps we are more similar than we like to think.

Regulus Black

As such, the chamber would remain hidden until Salazar Slytherin’s true heir arrived at Hogwarts, ready to continue his family’s legacy. ‘Shrewd Slytherin from fen’, as the Sorting Hat’s song goes, was the most controversial of the Hogwarts four Founders. Slytherin was a Parselmouth – able to converse with snakes – which, in those less enlightened times, was considered an affront to nature and proof of dark wizarding blood. He was also a skilled legilimens and also had a particular interest in magical creatures, which again was looked upon by his contemporaries. Even more worryingly, Slytherin was rumored to have practiced the Dark Arts. Slytherin is one of the four houses at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Slytherin’s Locket was a piece of jewelry that Salazar Slytherin once owned, which later became an heirloom for his descendants. This locket was passed down through the generations of Slytherins and it was said to be incredibly powerful. Slughorn was an accomplished Potions Master and he had a gift for picking out talented students. He took Snape under his wing and helped him to become the potions genius he is today. He also tutored a young Tom Riddle, though he was unaware of the darkness that lurked inside the boy.

Many people also think of Slytherins as being cold-hearted and ruthless. And this is true to some degree – Slytherin is known for producing many Dark Wizards. We sleep in ancient four-posters with green silk hangings, and bedspreads embroidered with silver thread. Medieval tapestries depicting the adventures of famous Slytherins cover the walls, and silver lanterns hang from the ceilings.

How the Slytherin House Was Founded

She is fiercely protective of her family and, in the end, she chose to save Harry Potter’s life rather than give him to Voldemort just to find out if her son was safe. This act of defiance ultimately led to Harry’s survival and the defeat of Voldemort. Wife of Lucius Malfoy and mother to Draco, Narcissa is also a Slytherin.

Yes, he was brave for doing what he did, but he did also purposefully bully Harry throughout most of his time at Hogwarts which there wasn’t really any need for. So, despite his good qualities and good intentions, he wasn’t the nicest of people. They are always striving to be the best and to achieve their goals.

Because you know what Salazar Slytherin looked for in his chosen students? You've been chosen by this house because you've got the potential to be great, in the true sense of the word. All right, you might see a couple of people hanging around the common room whom you might not think are destined for anything special. If the Sorting Hat put them in here, there's something great about them, and don't you forget it. For instance, we Slytherins look after our own – which is more than you can say for Ravenclaw. Apart from being the biggest bunch of swots you ever met, Ravenclaws are famous for clambering over each other to get good marks, whereas we Slytherins are family.

house slytherin

She is a pure-blood witch and, like her husband, she is arrogant, prejudiced, and true to the belief of pure-blood supremacy. Lucius Malfoy is a pure-blood wizard and the father of Draco Malfoy. He is a Slytherin through and through and he was definitely arrogant, prejudiced, and cruel. Malfoy spent much of his time at Hogwarts bullying Harry Potter and trying to make his life miserable.

However, Regulus eventually had a change of heart and realized that Voldemort was evil. He uncovered Voldemort’s secret, learned that he was creating Horcruxes to make himself immortal, and set about to destroy them. He found Slytherin’s locket, and stole it, leaving a copy in its place. Unfortunately, he died by the trap surrounding the Horcrux before he could destroy the locket.

Or perhaps in SlytherinYou’ll make your real friendsThose cunning folk use any meansTo achieve their ends. Wizarding World is the new official home of Harry Potter & Fantastic Beasts. Slytherins tended to be ambitious, shrewd, cunning, strong leaders, and achievement-oriented. They also had highly developed senses of self-preservation.[11] This means that Slytherins tended to hesitate before acting, so as to weigh all possible outcomes before deciding exactly what should be done.

Slytherin was something of an egomaniac, which is why he built the Chamber of Secrets as a sort of monument to himself, as explained on Pottermore. This also may explain his appeal to another wizard who was impressed with himself - Tom Riddle. It is decorated with dark green walls and there are several comfortable-looking armchairs and couches. There is also a large fireplace with a green marble mantelpiece. Phineas Nigellus Black was a pure-blood wizard who served as the Headmaster of Hogwarts during the late 1800s. He was also a member of the Wizengamot and the Minister for Magic.

Riddle attempted to use the chamber to rid the school of muggle borns, and nearly succeeded. He killed Myrtle Warren, a muggle-born girl, and petrified several others. There is an idea that Hufflepuffs are the least clever of all Hogwarts students – but that is not true.

Then, Snape was given the job for Defense Against the Dark Arts and the retired Slughorn was asked to take the teaching job of Potions once again. Once you've tried the Hogwarts Sorting Experience, you can find out more about your house, and how the houses came to be in the first place. For each known Slytherin below, his or her name is given together with the years he or she was a student in Slytherin. See the individual students' entries for more detailed information (such as the references for how we know that they're Slytherins and what years they were in).

It was said to be a place where Slytherin would house his “true” heirs – those with the magical ability and pure-blood heritage. Slytherin eventually left the school and, according to legend, created a secret chamber – the Chamber of Secrets – deep within the castle where he kept a monstrous creature that only he could control. The entrance to this chamber could only be opened by someone who spoke Parseltongue.

Riddle was a gifted student and, like Snape, he was also quite ambitious. But unlike Snape, Riddle’s ambition turned him to the Dark Arts. This is one of the better qualities of a Slytherin and they will do anything for the people they care about. It was claimed that the school was established in the 10th century, and so the Houses were formed around the same time period. Like all four of the Hogwarts Houses, Slytherin was founded by one of the four Hogwarts founders – Salazar Slytherin. Well, since this is the ultimate guide to Slytherin, we’re about to find out!

Trust in Government Act of 2023 H R. 2689

house bill 2689

Former President Trump, the presumptive 2024 presidential GOP nominee, has long criticized U.S. support for Ukraine and has defended Putin. More recently he’s complained that European allies have not done enough for Ukraine. While he stopped short of endorsing the supplemental funding package, his tone has shifted in recent days, acknowledging that Ukraine’s survival is important to the United States. They also passed several tenant-protection bills to safeguard renters against evictions and expensive security deposits.

Law that ended single-family zoning is struck down for five Southern California cities

house bill 2689

California lawmakers approved legislation on Monday to expand a housing law that has led to the construction of thousands of new homes, despite initial opposition from labor unions and environmental groups. This will insure that the actual biological father is listed on the birth certificate of the child. The Tennessee Department of Human Services (DHS), who oversees the child support program, is fighting vigorously to kill the bill. Because the department fears any changes in their enforcement rules could, possibly, jeopardize the $52 million in funding it receives from the Federal Government for its child support enforcement programs. In addition, DHS could also potentially receive millions more for reaching a quota of 90% acknowledged births, with yet another bonus out there for exceeding the quota. The Governor also signed SB 423 by Senator Wiener, which extends the sunset on SB 35 (Wiener, Chapter 366, Statutes of 2017), requiring local governments that are failing to meet state housing planning goals to streamline affordable housing projects.

Tennessee House Bill 2689 (Prior Session Legislation)

Eventually his license was suspended and he was pulled over and jailed for driving on a suspended license. Recently I was approached by a young man who told me he had been in a long-term relationship. Together they had a son and he signed the voluntary acknowledgement of paternity (VAP).

Homeless encampments are on the ballot in Arizona. Could California, other states follow?

He had help from the California Conference of Carpenters, which made an unusual break from other statewide labor unions to sponsor SB 423. The Assembly approved the bill on a bipartisan 52-8 vote, and the Senate passed it 27 to 7. Separately, the House also passed a bill that would force the China-based owner of the TikTok social media platform to either sell its stake or face a ban in the US. While all 210 Democrats voted in favour, more Republicans were against the legislation than in favour of it, 112 to 101. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said he wanted to push the measures through, even if it jeopardised his position. Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the significant boost in aid would supplement the tens of billions of assistance being provided to Ukraine by European allies.

The Florida Senate

Since taking office, Governor Newsom and the Legislature have invested $30 billion in affordable housing production and enacted dozens of CEQA reforms into law. In addition, Governor Newsom championed the creation of the Housing Accountability Unit at the California Department of Housing and Community Development to make sure cities and counties fulfill their legal responsibilities to plan and permit their fair share of housing. This focus on accountability has in part led to a 15-year high in housing starts in California. The Senate easily approved another major housing proposal on Monday, also by Wiener, that would allow nonprofit colleges and faith organizations such as mosques, synagogues and churches to quickly build affordable housing on their properties. That measure, Senate Bill 4, is expected to free up some 171,000 acres of land for development of affordable housing projects, according to another report from the UC Berkeley Terner Center for Housing Innovation.

Even with a burst of new weapons and ammunition, it is unlikely Ukraine will immediately recover after months of setbacks. Though SB 423 mandates that housing developers offer union-level wages and some healthcare benefits, the trades council and dozens of local and state labor groups worried that the protections were inadequate and would fail to safeguard construction workers. While the billions of dollars in new aid is expected to sustain the Ukrainian war effort in the months ahead, if Republicans gain more power in Congress - or take back the White House - further US support seems increasingly unlikely. But members on the House and Senate intelligence committees as well as the Justice Department warned that requiring a warrant would severely handicap officials from quickly responding to imminent national security threats. “This reauthorization of Section 702 gives the United States the authority to continue to collect foreign intelligence information about non-U.S. Persons located outside the United States, while at the same time codifying important reforms the Justice Department has adopted to ensure the protection of Americans’ privacy and civil liberties,” Garland said in a statement Saturday.

The law says that anyone who establishes a person as the biological parent of a child with intent to deprive the actual biological parent from their parental rights is guilty of a crime. The bill was filed at the beginning of the 2022 legislative session, and passed through one subcomittee before being deferred and placed on the Civil Justive Committee's calendar three times. The bill proposed that an unmarried man would be required to take a DNA test proving paternity before he could sign the voluntary acknowledgement of paternity and have his name on the birth certificate. State Rep. Antonio Parkinson, D-Memphis, said he filed HB 2698 after talking with a constituent who was ordered to continue paying child support despite learning after five years that the child he believed to be his was not. While in Rwanda, migrants who obtain legal status — presumably to enter Britain — will also be processed, authorities have said, though it’s unclear what that means exactly. Britain’s Conservative government has struck a deal with Rwanda to send some asylum seekers thousands of miles away to the East African country.

It was after this 5-year period where the young man I was talking about was locked in legally for blindly signing the voluntary acknowledgement of paternity. The government has said the migrants will have their papers processed within the first three months. Those who want to remain in Rwanda will be allowed to do so while authorities will also assist those who wish to return to their home countries.

Cheers and applause erupted in the House when the measure passed, by 311 votes to 112, with some Representatives waving Ukrainian flags. "Frontline air defence is as crucial as the protection of our cities and villages. Our long-range capabilities. Our artillery. Our ability to expand the area of our control," he said. Republicans said more than a third would be dedicated to replenishing weapons and ammunition. The much-delayed measure had vocal opponents in Congress and it took a fragile bipartisan deal to get the $61bn (£49bn) package through. The House of Representatives has finally approved billions of dollars in new US military aid for Ukraine to help combat Russia's invasion.

Still, housing experts say it’s an important step toward alleviating a housing shortage that’s helped drive a homelessness crisis and made it very difficult for middle- and low-income residents to find affordable places to live in California. “And they’re not obligated to follow a lot of rules at the local level, like any other developers,” said Jason Rhine, a lobbyist for Cal Cities. Areas that could see new multifamily housing projects under SB 423 include wealthier coastal locations such as Carmel-by-the-Sea, Malibu, Santa Monica, Venice, western San Francisco and San Diego. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the package would "make the United States of America richer, further ruin Ukraine and result in the deaths of even more Ukrainians". Welcoming the result, Mr Biden praised the bipartisan effort to "answer history's call" and urging the Senate to approve it quickly "so that I can sign it into law and we can quickly send weapons and equipment to Ukraine to meet their urgent battlefield needs".

President Biden signed into law a $95-billion military aid measure Wednesday that includes assistance for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan and has a provision that would force social media site TikTok to be sold or banned in the U.S. But despite the Biden administration’s urging and classified briefings to senators last week on the crucial role they say the spy program plays in protecting national security, a group of progressive and conservative lawmakers had refused to accept the version of the bill the House sent over earlier. Disagreements over the labor requirements in AB 2011 nearly jeopardized what has been considered the most substantive affordable housing proposal on the table this year.

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that he has signed 56 bills into law that incentivize and reduce barriers to housing and support the development of more affordable homes. This legislation streamlines housing developments, allows institutions like colleges and religious organizations to use portions of their property to build housing, and continues a state statute used to hold local communities accountable for their fair share of housing. The program permits the U.S. government to collect without a warrant the communications of non-Americans located outside the country to gather foreign intelligence. The reauthorization faced a long and bumpy road to final passage Friday after months of clashes between privacy advocates and national security hawks pushed consideration of the legislation to the brink of expiration. Senate Bill 423 would extend by a decade a state housing law set to expire in 2026 that lets developers skip much of the bureaucratic process often blamed for blocking construction of multifamily projects, though only in cities that have fallen behind on state-mandated housing goals. The legislation now heads to Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has until Oct. 14 to sign or veto hundreds of bills. The administration and a bipartisan group of lawmakers have called the social media site a growing national security concern.

Days after they reached a rare deal between affordable housing advocates and labor unions, California lawmakers on Monday approved two significant bills that would guarantee livable wages on projects to convert underutilized commercial buildings into housing. To improve the service delivery of agencies and public perception of agency interactions, and for other purposes. White House officials came to view Johnson as a direct and honest actor throughout the negotiations, according to a senior administration official. Biden had success finding common ground with Republicans earlier in his term to win the passage of a $1-trillion infrastructure deal, legislation to boost the U.S. semiconductor industry and an expansion of federal healthcare services for veterans exposed to toxic smoke from burn pits. In private conversations with Johnson, Biden and White House officials emphasized the stakes for Europe if Ukraine were to fall to Russia.

As a result, we have a housing victory that checks off a lot of the boxes — affordability, mixed-use, transit accessibility and labor security,” Rendon said in a statement. Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) said the two proposals provide a powerful path to more development in California without sacrificing training qualifications and union-approved wages. Five years later, he found out the mother had been unfaithful during the time they were together. The law does make exceptions for children conceived as a result of rape, if the child has been or in the process of being adopted or the victim of the offense was the defendant's spouse at the time of the offense.

Speaking to the BBC World Service's Newshour programme, Oleksandr Merezhko, head of Ukraine's foreign affairs committee, described the vote as a "historic decision" that would "definitely save lots of lives of our civilians and our soldiers". Alongside replenishing weapons and ammunition systems, Ukraine will also receive more than $9bn (£7.28bn) of economic assistance in the form of "forgivable loans" - ones that do not need to be paid back. The package will now go to the Senate, which is expected to pass it within the next few days before President Joe Biden signs it into law. The legislation that was approved 60 to 34 with bipartisan support would extend for two years the program known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Develop strategies for the integration of services and development of products involving multiple agencies as described in this Act. Measure performance empirically and by on-the-ground results for the people of the United States, especially for experiences of the people of the United States with services delivered by agencies.

Under House Bill 2698/Senate Bill 1777 unwed fathers could still voluntarily sign, but in order for the birth certificate to be officially validated, the signer must provide the results of a DNA test to Vital Records. Finally, under this scenario, the child's right to have their legal biological father listed on their birth certificate and in some cases, their lives, was stolen from them also. Because he voluntarily signed and it had passed a 5-year period to rescind the voluntary acknowledgment, he was deemed the legal parent. A bill proposed during the 2022 legislative session aimed at protecting against paternity fraud is making the rounds on social media. Rwanda says it’s ready to receive migrants from the United Kingdom after the British Parliament this week approved a long-stalled and controversial bill seeking to stem the tide of people crossing the English Channel in small boats by deporting some of them to the East African country. In public, the administration deployed a strategy of downgrading intelligence to reveal Russia’s efforts to tighten its ties with U.S. adversaries China, North Korea and Iran to fortify Moscow’s defense industrial complex and get around U.S. and European sanctions.

The migrants will be free to walk outside the hostel and even visit the nearby Kigali city center. Tents will be set up within the hostel’s compound for processing their documentation and for various briefings. After they are sent to Rwanda, the migrants will be shown to their rooms to rest, after which they will be offered food and given some orientation points about Kigali and Rwanda, said hostel manager Ismael Bakina. There is even a place ready and waiting for the migrants — a refurbished Hope Hostel in the vibrant upscale neighborhood of Kagugu, an area of the Rwandan capital of Kigali that is home to many expatriates and several international schools. Far-right Republicans have also adamantly opposed sending more money for Ukraine. Biden in August requested more than $20 billion to keep aid flowing into Ukraine, but the money was stripped out of a must-pass spending bill even as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled to Washington to make a personal plea for continued U.S. backing. Biden, the day after returning from a whirlwind trip to Tel Aviv following the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack on Israel, used a rare prime time address to make his pitch for the supplemental funding.

The measure is also meant to be a deterrent to migrants who risk their lives in leaky, inflatable boats in hopes that they will be able to claim asylum once they reach Britain. Also signed a new treaty with Rwanda to beef up protections for migrants, and adopted new legislation declaring Rwanda to be a safe country. For example, U.S. officials this month laid out intelligence findings that showed China has surged sales to Russia of machine tools, microelectronics and other technology that Moscow in turn is using to produce missiles, tanks, aircraft and other weaponry. Earlier, the White House publicized intelligence that Russia had acquired ballistic missiles from North Korea and acquired attack drones from Iran. At the time, the House was in chaos because the Republican majority had been unable to select a speaker to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield, who had been removed more than two weeks earlier. McCarthy’s ouster by the GOP’s far right came after he agreed earlier to allow federal spending levels that many far-right House Republicans disagreed with and wanted undone.

Though the surveillance tool targets only non-Americans in other countries, it also collects communications of Americans when they are in contact with those targeted foreigners. Sen. Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat in the chamber, had been pushing a proposal that would require U.S. officials to get a warrant before accessing American communications. Still, officials had said that court approval shouldn’t be a substitute for congressional authorization, especially since communications companies could cease cooperation with the government if the program is allowed to lapse. The one-size-fits-all approach of HB 2689 would have been detrimental to the plumbing industry and the communities it serves, stifling innovation and flexibility in plumbing practices. The industry has long opposed efforts to mandate a statewide plumbing code in Texas, and the defeat of this legislation is a prime example of the plumbing industry, both union and non-union, moving in lockstep to preserve and protect its plumbing code of choice.

AB 2011, “along with its companion bill SB 6, has the potential to transform housing policy here in California,” Wicks said during a Monday debate in the Assembly. All of this can be remedied, by simply requiring a DNA test on the front end to alleviate any challenges and potential emotional scarring for the child, the wrongfully accused father, the mother and the rightful biological father. In Juvenile Court, he presented the DNA evidence to the magistrate and was basically told, “somebody’s got to feed him and it will be you.” He was ordered to pay child support and found in arrears.

“I think that is a risk that we cannot afford to take with the vast array of challenges our nation faces around the world,” Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.), chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Friday. “If the government wants to spy on my private communications or the private communications of any American, they should be required to get approval from a judge, just as our Founding Fathers intended in writing the Constitution,” Durbin said. “This is a significant victory for the plumbing industry in Texas and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our partners who have been tirelessly advocating for the adoption of the UPC,” said John Mata, IAPMO Senior Director of Field Services. Senate Bill 6 and Assembly Bill 2011 represent a potentially major shift in the Capitol, where agreements between the state’s powerful labor organizations and advocates for a more robust housing supply are notoriously difficult to negotiate. Only 11% of bills made it past committee and only about 2% were enacted in 2021–2023.

There are many significant resilient provisions that communities can enjoy in the UPC, such as specifications to address the impact of water temperature on the potential for scalding and Legionella growth. The UPC also includes holistic provisions for storm piping materials and sizing methodologies, along with domestic water right-sizing through the addition of the Water Demand CalculatorTM (WDC). The UPC is the only national model plumbing code with significant updates for water pipe sizing in buildings since the development of Hunter’s Curve more than 80 years ago. It is the result of a multiyear, IAPMO-led effort to develop a new statistically based pipe sizing method stemming from a need to address profound water safety and wasted water and energy concerns due to oversized water supply pipes in homes and buildings.

Biden also signed an initial aid package of military assistance and said shipment would begin in the “next few hours” — the first tranche from about $61 billion allocated for Ukraine, according to U.S. officials. It is expected to include air defense capabilities, artillery rounds, armored vehicles and other weapons to shore up Ukrainian forces who have seen morale sink as the Russian military has racked up win after win. But significant damage has been done to the Biden administration’s effort to help Ukraine repel Russia’s invasion during the funding impasse that dates to August, when the Democratic president made his first emergency spending request for Ukraine aid.

All the while, senior Biden officials frequently updated McConnell and key House Republican committee leaders, including Reps. Michael McCaul of Texas and Michael R. Turner of Ohio. Some of their concerns extend beyond environmental impacts and into local control over housing decisions in their communities. Senate Bill 4 would let religious groups and nonprofit colleges build homes on excess land, but lawmakers will need to make a deal with unions on the proposal. But that’s still far short of what’s needed to dig the state out of a severe shortage. The House vote had been delayed by Republicans for months, with some objecting to sending money overseas instead of dealing with the US-Mexico border issue.

Steve Ricchetti, counselor to the president, and legislative affairs director Shuwanza Goff were in regular contact with Johnson. In a daily meeting convened by White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, the president’s top aides — seated around a big oval table in Zients’ office — would brainstorm possible ways to better make the case about Ukraine’s dire situation in the absence of aid. On explicit orders from Biden, White House officials also avoided directly attacking Johnson over the stalled aid — a directive the president repeatedly instilled in his senior staff.

Parkinson also passed a separate bill in 2022, HB 2699 that did remove a five-year statute of limitations to challenge an acknowledgement of paternity on the basis of fraud, duress or mistake. A bill must be passed by both the House and Senate in identical form and then be signed by the President to become law. It will typically be considered by committee next before it is possibly sent on to the House or Senate as a whole. For those who choose to stay, Mukurilinda said Rwanda’s government will bear full financial and other responsibilities for five years, after which they will be considered integrated into the society. Meals will be prepared in the hostel’s main kitchen but provisions are also being made for those who want to prepare their own meals, he said.

California lawmakers introduced bills this year to strengthen rules against high rents and evictions. The League of California Cities, which lobbies on behalf of hundreds of local governments in the Capitol, is particularly concerned about a provision of SB 423 that would let the California Department of General Services step in and develop housing on state-owned property in local jurisdictions. The California Coastal Commission this summer argued against SB 423’s expansion into coastal areas exempted from development in the original law. The commission argued that more construction on the coast could worsen climate outcomes amid sea level rise and a changing environment. Wiener addressed those concerns earlier this year with amendments that strengthened labor regulations on certain projects, easing some opposition.

But longer term, it remains uncertain whether Ukraine — after months of losses in eastern Ukraine and sustaining massive damage to its infrastructure — can make enough progress to sustain U.S. political support before burning through the latest influx of money. The announcement marks an end to long, painful battle with Republicans in Congress over urgently needed assistance for Ukraine. State Sen. María Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles) struck a late deal to ease some of the opposition with amendments that would delay implementation until April 1 and relax some of the penalties on landlords, though the bill still includes new oversight of eviction processes.

Down Payment Assistance Programs And Grants

down payment for a house

The larger your down payment, the less you have to borrow, the lower your payment may be, and the more likely you are to qualify for favorable terms. Over the years, the industry has changed to make homeownership more accessible. It’s important to note that down payment requirements aren’t solely determined by lenders. In many cases, the down payment requirement is set by the entity backing the loan, which may be the FHA, Fannie Mae or the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Lenders appreciate large down payments because it lowers their financial risk and shows that you’re a motivated buyer.

Places with the highest median down payments (in dollars)

The average down payment for a house differs widely by state due to different home prices. Additionally, the age of home buyers also plays a factor, as older buyers tend to have more money. Home buyers are posting smaller down payments in most housing markets since home prices peaked in the fourth quarter of 2022 and are decreasing through 2023 year-to-date.

Next steps to get a mortgage

Look for an account that pays a high interest rate to make your money work for you. When saving for a house, you may not think about factoring in home maintenance. Keeping up with pipes that leak and appliances that break can be tough, especially if you don’t buy a brand-new home.

Business services

For example, you can be eligible for a conventional loan with as little as 3% down. Government-backed programs such as FHA loans, VA loans or USDA loans can require 0% to 10% but are more likely to charge upfront and annual fees. In fact, many people do put down less than 20% when buying a home. The median down payment for all US homebuyers in 2023 was 14% of the purchase price, according to The National Association of Realtors.

If your landlord allows it, consider bringing in a roommate temporarily if you are stuck in an expensive lease. By splitting the rent, you can save more money towards your dream of home ownership. A big part of learning how to save up for a house is knowing how much you want to save. Take care of any high-interest debt and other obligations before you start saving for a house.

State and Local Assistance Programs

Plus, qualifying borrowers are eligible for rate reductions, which can further lower your monthly payment. The Conventional 97 and HomeOne loan programs are available when at least one borrower is a first-time homebuyer. However, borrowers who make 100% or less of their area's median income (120% in high-cost areas) are eligible for lower interest rates. Down Payment Assistance Programs—Local county or city governments, local housing authorities, and charitable foundations sometimes provide grants to first-time home-buyers. Down payment assistance is usually only reserved for need-based applicants purchasing a primary residence. Grants can come in the form of money applied to a down payment or an interest-free loan meant to supplement a main mortgage.

You may want to budget up to 1% of the home’s value for annual maintenance costs. Plus insurance, taxes, and homeowners association fees, if there are any, can also add significantly to the monthly cost of owning a home. If you’re struggling to come up with a down payment, you may still be able to qualify for a home loan. A lower interest rate can help you save money by paying less interest over the life of the loan.

Our research is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of personal finance services and products that best suit your needs. To help you in the decision-making process, our expert contributors compare common preferences and potential pain points, such as affordability, accessibility, and credibility. Thankfully, several strategies can help alleviate the burden of paying for closing costs if you're already struggling to put together a sizable down payment.

Rising mortgage interest rates and lingering high home prices are causing buyers to back out of the market. If you think you’re ready to shop around for a home loan, consider using Credible to help you easily compare interest rates from multiple lenders in minutes. Gen Z and millennial homebuyers are struggling to buy homes on their own. About 36% of younger buyers plan to receive a cash gift from their family to help with the down payment on a home, a Redfin study found. Conforming loans have maximum loan amounts that are set by the government and conform to other rules set by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, the companies that provide backing for conforming loans.

There are "no money down" mortgages available, but not all buyers and properties will qualify. Some buyers may be able to purchase a $400k home with no money down. Most borrowers, however, will be looking at between 3% and 5% of the purchase price – a down payment of $12,000 to $20,000. Savings—Most home-buyers save up for their down payments by setting aside savings until they reach their desired target, whether it's 20% or 3.5%.

However, home-buyers must pay an upfront mortgage insurance premium at closing that is worth 1.75% of the loan amount, on top of the down payment. In addition, monthly mortgage insurance payments last for the life of the loan unless refinanced to a conventional loan. For more information about or to do calculations involving FHA loans, please visit the FHA Loan Calculator. Most home loans require at least 3% of the price of the home as a down payment. Although it's a myth that a 20% down payment is required to obtain a loan, keep in mind that the higher your down payment, the lower your monthly payment.

Conventional loans are backed by private lenders, like a bank, rather than the federal government and often have strict requirements around credit score and debt-to-income ratios. If you have excellent credit with a 20% down payment, a conventional loan may be a great option, as it usually offers lower interest rates without private mortgage insurance (PMI). You can still obtain a conventional loan with less than a 20% down payment, but PMI will be required. Bankrate.com is an independent, advertising-supported publisher and comparison service.
